Ensembles & Teaching
Several updates and a few longer term plans to share.
- The Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra in Denver (the greatest band ever on the planet) is gearing up to begin rehearsals Monday, September 8. If you're in the metro area, you should definitely get on board and be a part of the mayhem. We have a new conductor this season and she's going to be a tremendous asset to the team. The music is centered around colors and the songs are a widely eclectic group. Of course the main reason to join is it's fun. And even if you're outside the Denver-metro, participating online and joining the YouTube broadcasts of rehearsals will make you faster and more competent as a musician. - Jolly Roger Book 1 Student Edition has been almost entirely updated with way fancier (and annoying) standard notation, a new sequence that makes a lot more sense, and (get this) will have you up and running with fingerstyle ukulele in as little as 17 lessons. There are 30 lessons total in the book, but the latter half are mostly for repertoire and musicality. The long awaited teacher's guide will begin appearing with each video I will be posting this fall. - New Mexico is happening and I need you to come join me. If you are in Albuquerque, check out the UNM Continuing Ed options for guitar and ukulele. Starting next week, I will have three sections of guitar, and two sections of ukulele, and we'll be having Christmas classes beginning in November. We're working toward starting ensembles in January (hopefully) with an online component. I don't have all the details worked out, but I have the list of stuff you've told me you'd like to do if live in an area without a meaningful ukulele program. I'm trying to see how much of that we can make happen. In the meantime, I need you to get your fingerpickin' up and running. Continuing Ed classes are HERE.
- Video: Summer didn't go the way I was planning and I haven't been able to do much in the way of live sessions as I ended up taking a job, but I do intend to start making stand-alone videos on various topics y'all have asked for recently and we'll see how those go. As you know, I'm not much of a movie star. (See above. Gah!)
- Teaching Material: I am regularly asked if it is okay for you to use Jolly Roger material in your ukulele classes and the answer is yes. Book 1, Book 2, and the Jumping Flea Arpeggiator are all completely okay to use to teach other people. No need to ask. However, I am noticing more and more of my "member's only" material being retyped onto the MuseScore site or just floating around the web and that bums me out. Please ask on that stuff if you can use it and as long as you're not doing evil, I'm probably okay with your plans.
- Website Changes: The site is dragging a little bit and I'm going to be doing some stress testing on the site and its plug-ins so you may get a few weird emails from me you can ignore. I'm also changing the way subscriptions are handled on the website because it just feels crazy. If you are set up for a quarterly deduction, please turn off your automatic renewals when it comes time to re-up and sign up for the site using the new sign up form. It will only charge you once a year, and it will be half the price you've been paying. Easier for me and cheaper for you. We all win.
