Water is Wide

April 21, 2026: Water is Wide (Scottish or English Traditional) is posted in Book 2.

The Wikipedia page on this is a mess, but it seems like this is a tune that's been around awhile and they've changed it enough so many times that it doesn't much matter where it started. We still have a great melody. And what I find hilarious is how our narrator starts off wildly in love and ends up wildly out of love ... it's what happens sometimes. That's why we have dating apps.

We're in the key of A on this one so remember back to Book 1 Lesson 26 when we tackled 30-ish songs all in the key of A. The key of A is baritone and guitar friendly as well, so make a friend and go play together. (Let them do the chords and you play the lead ... that's where stardom lies.) The baritone version is in E major and that key's good for making your brain melt.

This particular song adds in B minor, C# minor, and F# minor, and since you're a rock star now you'll whip this one out in no time. You'll have a challenging shift from Measure 9 into Measure 10, but you'll manage with a little practice. Hopefully you're continuing to work on your Make a Better Bar exercise from Book 1 Lesson 10 to become fearless when those types of chords show up.

Remember we're getting together on Sunday nights at 7 pm Mountain time on YouTube and you should join us. Info isĀ here.
